Beyond Butterflies: Discovering Moths

DATE: Wednesday 4/15/26   TIME: 3:30pm - 5:00pm

Butterflies may be familiar, but moths outnumber them tenfold—and their lives are far more interesting than most people realize. In this engaging presentation, discover the hidden world of moths, from caterpillars with startling eyespots that help scare away predators to adults that mimic spiders or hover like hummingbirds. Learn how moths navigate the night sky, avoid hungry bats, and transform from leaf-eating caterpillars into delicate winged adults.

Explore how moths grow, survive, and thrive after dark—and discover why these often-overlooked insects are among the most remarkable creatures in the garden. After the talk, continue the experience with a visit to the conservatory to see live butterflies and moths up close.

Registration includes Garden admission for the day—we encourage you to explore the Garden before and after class!

Instructor: Kimberlie Sasan is a Texas Master Naturalist volunteer and certified Entomology Specialist based in Fort Worth, Texas. Her volunteer work focuses on observing and documenting local biodiversity, studying the fascinating diversity of gall-forming wasps and giving outreach presentations that help connect people with the natural world around them.

She is an avid community scientist and enthusiastic iNaturalist user with more than 36,000 observations. Kimberlie is especially interested in the small, easily overlooked organisms living in everyday spaces and enjoys helping others learn how to notice, appreciate, and contribute to documenting nature in their own neighborhoods.

Professionally, Kimberlie works as a research assistant in the BRIT herbarium at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, where she supports research collections with a special focus on Colombian fern diversity, including specimen processing and DNA extraction. Her work bridges field observation and formal research, reinforcing her belief that careful documentation—whether through community science or herbarium collections—is essential to understanding and conserving biodiversity.

Inclement Weather: This class is indoors and will proceed as scheduled, rain or shine.
