6:00pm - Explore Brazilian Movement & Music

Details

This 4-session introductory series will take you on a historical and cultural journey through northeastern Brazil's roots and popular expressions! Join us to explore the relationship between rhythm, movement, music, and cultural identity in this introduction to 4 popular expressions: Samba de Roda, Samba Reggae, Maculelê, and Capoeira Regional. Samba de Roda has its roots in the Angola dance of Semba, and Samba Reggae modernizes this popular dance to fill the streets during carnival. Maculelê is the celebration of warriors and freedom fighters, and Capoeira Regional is the iconic martial art that seems like a dance with its use of rhythm and fluidity.

In each session we will learn traditional rhythms on Afro-Brazilian percussion instruments, learn and discuss a new song, and try basic steps in each format, as we build community through rhythm and resonance. These movements are suitable for adults of all ages and fitness levels. When weather permits, sessions will be held in the Japanese Garden Pavilion.

Registration includes a series of 4 sessions – We cannot provide partial refunds for missed sessions.
